What God Said Yesterday, May Not Work Today—Find Out Why
TODAY'S TEACHING
Seek the Lord, and his strength: seek his face evermore. —Psalm 105:4
When King Jehoshaphat heard that a massive army was marching toward Judah, he didn’t rush into action or rely on his past victories.
He did something I found fascinating.
Instead of doing what he had usually done to win a war, he chose to seek God first, in case there was something new He had to say this time round.
He didn’t look for advice from others or fall back on old strategies that had worked before.
Jehoshaphat understood that no matter how many battles he’d won before, this situation might require a fresh word from God.
Old methods wouldn’t cut it this time unless God Himself anointed them.
I’ve experienced this in my own life.
There have been times when I’ve faced challenges that seemed overwhelming, and I immediately wanted to reach for solutions that had worked in the past.
But I quickly realized that what had worked before might not have the same power now.
I might need something new—a fresh direction from God.
I remember a particular time when I was faced with a huge decision in my life, and nothing I tried seemed to work.
It felt like I was spinning my wheels, doing all the things I’d done before, but nothing was moving forward.
That’s when I stopped and decided to seek God for a fresh word.
I gave Him my full attention, trusting that He would guide me—and He did.
You see, Jehoshaphat understood that relying on the same old ways wouldn’t be enough.
He knew that unless God spoke to him directly, he was at a loss.
He couldn’t go on without hearing from God.
It wasn’t just important—it was essential for his survival and for the protection of his people.
God’s voice was the answer, and he knew that only a fresh word from God could change the outcome of the situation.
Maybe you’re in a similar spot today.
You might feel like you’re sinking, like the walls are closing in, and you don’t know where to turn.
Perhaps you're desperate for a word from God, unsure of which way to go.
But here’s the truth: God wants to speak to you even more than you want to hear from Him.
He’s waiting for you to turn to Him with your full attention because what worked yesterday, may not work today.
Seek Him, and I promise, you won’t be disappointed.
Just like He spoke a fresh word to me when I needed it most, He’s ready to do the same for you.
You can trust Him to guide you through whatever you’re facing today.
If this resonates with you, here's a short prayer you can say today:
"Dear God, I know that what worked yesterday might not work today, and I’m okay with that. I need a fresh word from You, a new direction for this moment—if You know that is what is needed. Just like a car needs a new route when the old one’s blocked, I trust You to guide me through whatever’s ahead. Speak to my heart and help me listen because I know You have exactly what I need to make it through today. Amen."
God bless you!

TODAY'S QUESTIONS
1. How can we discern when God is leading us to a new direction, even if old methods have worked in the past?
We all know how easy it is to rely on what worked before—whether it’s a strategy, a routine, or a method. But just like a GPS that recalculates when we take a wrong turn, God might be redirecting us. We won't know unless we seek Him diligently and give Him our full attention. We need to stay flexible and open to change, even if it feels uncomfortable. The key is to remain sensitive to God’s promptings, always checking in with Him through prayer and listening to His voice. If we trust that He has a fresh plan for us, we can move confidently, knowing He will guide us in the right direction.
2. Why is it important for Christians to seek God’s voice directly, rather than relying on old formulas or advice from others?
It’s tempting to ask others what they would do, or rely on formulas that have worked in the past. But here’s the thing: God’s plan for you is unique, and it’s not always the same as someone else’s. Relying on others’ experiences can be like using someone else’s map when you need to find your own way. We must seek God directly for His guidance, because He knows the exact path we need to take. He wants a personal relationship with each of us, and He’s ready to lead us in new and exciting directions if we’ll just listen. This may seem too simple but remember, what's easy to do, is also easy not to do.
3. In what ways can Believers build a habit of listening for God’s fresh word in our daily lives, especially when facing challenges?
Listening to God’s voice daily is like building a muscle. It gets stronger the more we use it. We can start by carving out quiet time each day to simply be still and listen. Sometimes it’s easy to rush through the day, but when we take a moment to pause and tune in, we open ourselves up to hear His guidance. God speaks to us in different ways—through Scripture, through a whisper in our heart, or through a sense of peace. The more we seek Him, the easier it becomes to recognize His voice. There's no shortcut to taking quality time daily to get closer to God.
4. How do we trust God for new instructions when the situation feels overwhelming or different from past experiences?
When life feels overwhelming, it’s natural to want to fall back on what we know, to cling to old methods. But trust means letting go of that control and being willing to walk into the unknown with God. Just like when we face a storm and we can’t see the end, we have to trust the storm will pass because God’s with us through it all. The key is to remember that God has seen our future and has already prepared the way for us. When we step out in faith, trusting that He knows best, He’ll give us the strength and wisdom to navigate the situation through His Holy Spirit.
5. What can Christians learn from King Jehoshaphat’s response to crisis, and how can we apply that approach in our own lives?
King Jehoshaphat showed us the power of turning to God in times of crisis. Instead of solely relying on his military strategies or the advice of others, he sought God’s guidance first. He knew that no matter how experienced he was, he needed a fresh word from God to lead his people. In our own lives, we can learn to put God first, especially when we face challenges. Instead of rushing into solutions or relying on our own strength, we need to take a step back, seek God’s will, and trust Him to lead us through. When we do this on a regular basis, we’ll find peace in knowing that His plans are always better than ours.
