What To Do When God Speaks Without Words

TODAY'S TEACHING

I am speaking the truth in Christ. I am not lying, my conscience [enlightened and prompted] by the Holy Spirit bearing witness with me. —Romans 9:1

Ever felt that little tug in your heart to do something that seems completely random or insignificant?

That’s often the Holy Spirit giving you a gentle nudge.

In today’s verse, Paul talks about being led by the Spirit, and that’s one of the many ways God speaks to us—through these subtle promptings that we might be tempted to brush off as nothing.

I’ll never forget a time when I was at the grocery store and saw an older woman struggling to reach a box on a high shelf.

I wasn’t in a rush, but I hesitated, thinking she’d figure it out.

But that gentle nudge wouldn’t go away.

“Go help her.”

So, I finally walked over, grabbed the box, and handed it to her.

She looked up at me, her eyes filling with tears, and said, “You have no idea what this means. I just lost my husband, and I didn’t think I could do these things alone.”

That wasn’t just about grabbing a box—that was God showing her she’s not alone, and I got to be a part of that.

It’s those little moments that teach us about God’s character

He’s saying, “Every single thing you do is like planting a seed, and every seed will eventually produce a harvest.”

If I sow kindness, even in small ways, I can expect kindness to show up in my life.

Like a farmer planting good seed, what you put in the ground really does matter.

Just the other day, I felt a prompting to send an encouraging message to a man I know who’s been in ministry for years.

I didn’t know why—I just knew I needed to do it.

When he replied, he said, “Your words were confirmation for a decision I’ve been struggling with. I asked God to send me a sign today, and He did through you!”

You never know what God is doing through your obedience.

When you follow these inner promptings, life becomes a whole new adventure

Ordinary days turn into extraordinary moments when you’re listening for His voice on the inside, even in the tiniest details.

So, be sensitive to those leadings—no matter how small they may seem.

You never know what kind of harvest will spring up from a simple step of obedience.

If this resonates with you, here's a short prayer you can say today:

"Dear God, please help me to always be sensitive to Your lead. I don’t want to just drift through life. I want to move where You’re calling me, even if it’s a gentle nudge in a direction I didn’t expect. When You whisper, let my heart lean in and obey, trusting that each step is part of a bigger picture You’re painting. Teach me to follow Your voice, no matter how small the prompting, because I know You see the harvest I can’t yet see. Amen."

God bless you!

TODAY'S QUESTIONS

1. How does one distinguish between God’s prompting and their own thoughts or emotions?

It’s not always easy to tell, right? Sometimes, God’s voice is like a gentle breeze—a quiet nudge in our spirit that’s persistent but peaceful. If a thought brings confusion or fear, that’s usually a red flag that it’s not from Him. God’s promptings always align with His Word, and they’ll produce a sense of peace, even if it’s something that stretches us outside our comfort zone. It’s like tuning in to the right radio frequency—when it’s His voice, it’ll have clarity and truth, pushing us toward something good, even if it’s challenging. That's why the more we read God's Word, the more acquainted we become with His voice, even if it's simply a prompting inside.

2. What role does obedience to the Holy Spirit’s guidance play in a Christian’s spiritual growth?

Obedience is like lifting weights at the gym—every time we respond to God’s prompting, we’re building spiritual muscles. The more we say “yes” to those little nudges, the stronger and more sensitive we become to His voice. And just like any muscle, if we ignore it, it weakens. God often starts us off with small steps of obedience before moving us into bigger assignments. Each act of obedience, no matter how small, is a step forward in our faith walk, growing us into who He’s called us to be.

3. How can believers cultivate a heart that is sensitive and responsive to the Spirit’s nudges?

It’s all about relationship. Regularly spending time in prayer, digging into God’s Word, and quieting the noise around us—these are like watering the soil of our hearts so we’re ready when He speaks. When we consistently spend time in His presence, our hearts get tuned to His voice, making it easier to pick up on those gentle whispers. Think of it like recognizing a close friend’s voice in a crowded room—the more time we spend with Him, the quicker we’ll respond when He calls, no matter how noisy life is.

4. What are some biblical examples of individuals who followed God’s subtle promptings, and what can be learned from their experiences??

Look at Philip in the book of Acts—he was told to go up to a chariot in the middle of nowhere, which probably didn’t make much sense at first. But he obeyed, and it led to a divine encounter that resulted in the Ethiopian eunuch’s salvation. Or think about Ananias, who was told to go pray for Saul—someone known for persecuting Christians. Yet he followed God’s nudge, and Saul became Paul, one of the greatest apostles. These stories show us that God’s promptings can lead to life-changing moments, even when they don’t seem logical.

5. What should Christians do when they feel uncertain or hesitant about a leading they believe is from God?

It’s okay to ask God for confirmation—He’s not bothered by our questions. Sometimes, uncertainty is just fear talking, but other times, it’s wisdom telling us to pause and pray. Seek God’s peace about it, maybe ask for a couple of scriptures or more to back up what you’re feeling. You can even share it with a trusted, mature believer who can pray with you. Like a puzzle piece that fits perfectly, God’s true leading will always come together with clarity and confidence in His timing. The biggest suggestion I can give, is don't always wait to have it all figured out before you obey what God is saying to you.

Scripture Of The Week

So Christ was sacrificed once to take away the sins of many people; and he will appear a second time, not to bear sin, but to bring salvation to those who are waiting for him.
