What Happens When You Step Out By Faith And Miss It?

TODAY'S TEACHING
Behold, the eye of the Lord is upon those who fear Him [and worship Him with awe-inspired reverence and obedience], on those who hope [confidently] in His compassion and lovingkindness.
—Psalm 33:18
I used to overthink almost everything when it came to hearing God. Not casually… I mean sit-there-too-long, second-guess-every-impression kind of overthinking. I’d pray, feel like maybe He was nudging me toward something, and then immediately follow it with, but what if that’s just me?
That sorta questioning slowed down my walk with Him.
I remember one afternoon I was trying to decide whether to act on something I felt the Lord had put on my heart to. It was just a text I was supposed to send. Nothing huge. Just one of those steps that feels small until you realize it might actually matter more than you think. My thumb hovered there longer than it should’ve, like pressing “send” somehow carried my entire future with it.
That’s where fear starts getting creative.
What if I miss God? What if I mess this up? What if I step out thinking it’s Him… and it’s not?
I didn’t realize it then, but I was trying to follow God without allowing any margin for being human.
There was a gentleman I heard about who felt led to reach out to someone he hadn’t talked to in years. He wrote the message, rewrote it, deleted it, typed it again… left it sitting in his drafts for almost two days. Finally, he sent it, a little awkward, not perfectly worded, honestly kind of clunky. Turns out the timing wasn’t exactly what he thought it would be, but the conversation that came out of it still mattered… just in a different way than he expected.
That stuck with me.
Because it showed me something I didn’t want to admit… sometimes we’re so afraid of getting it wrong that we end up doing nothing at all. And doing nothing feels safer, but it doesn’t move us anywhere.
At some point, I finally said it out loud to God… what if I miss You?
Not in some polished, spiritual way. Just honest. A little frustrated. A little tired of going in circles.
And the answer I sensed come back wasn’t complicated. It was simple, almost disarming in how straightforward it was… "If you miss Me, I’ll find you Daniel."
That did something in me.
It didn’t make me suddenly fearless, but it loosened the grip fear had on every decision. Because I realized I wasn’t walking a tightrope where one wrong step would send me off course forever. I was walking with a God who actually knows how to redirect, correct, and, honestly, cover me when I don’t get it exactly right.
That changes how you move.
You stop waiting for perfect clarity before you act. You stop needing 100% certainty before you take a step. As today's scripture says, you start trusting that your heart matters to God… and if your heart is set on following Him and obeying, He’s not sitting back waiting for you to fail.
He’s involved.
Look, faith doesn’t mean you never miss it.
It means you trust God enough to move anyway, knowing He’s bigger than your mistakes, your timing, your learning curve… all of it.
So if you’ve been stuck in that loop, wondering if you’re hearing right, afraid to move because you might get it wrong… maybe the question isn’t what if I miss God?
Maybe it’s… what if He’s already guiding you, and you’re just hesitating.
Take the step you believe in your heart is the right one. It's easier to steer a car that is at least rolling forward slowly, than a parked one.
And don't worry... the Lord knows how to find you... every single time.
If this resonates with you, here's a short prayer you can say today:
"Dear God, I get stuck in my head more than I want to admit, running the same question over and over… what if I get this wrong, what if I miss You, what if I move too soon or too late. And then I sit there, not moving at all, which I know isn’t what You’re asking for either. Help me trust that You’re not trying to trip me up, that You’re actually leading me even when I don’t feel completely sure. I don’t want to stay stuck just because I’m afraid. Amen."
God bless you!
Your brother in Christ,
Daniel

DEVOTIONAL QUESTIONS
1. Why are Christians so afraid of missing God when we step out in faith?
If we’re honest, a lot of it comes from pressure we’ve put on ourselves. Like we think following the Lord means getting everything exactly right the first time, no hesitation, no learning curve. Somewhere along the way, we started believing that one wrong move could throw everything off. That’s a heavy way to live. And it doesn’t really match how God actually works with people… He corrects, He redirects, He teaches. He doesn’t abandon us because we didn’t get it perfect.
2. How can a Believer know if they’re hearing from God or just their own thoughts?
This one can feel confusing and sometimes it is. But usually, when something keeps coming back to you, not in a frantic way, just steady… there’s something to pay attention to there. It doesn’t always come with a loud confirmation. Sometimes it’s quiet, persistent, not pushy, just there again. It lines up with His Word. And even then, we might not feel totally sure. That’s where trust comes in… not blind, but willing to move even while we’re still learning.
3. What happens when a Christian doesn't act because they’re afraid?
Life keeps moving, but inside, something feels off. Not over the top… just this low-level sense of being stuck, like you’re circling the same thoughts again and again. We tell ourselves we’re being careful, but sometimes we’re just delaying obedience. And over time, that hesitation can become a habit. It’s not that God stops speaking… it’s that we get used to not responding.
4. Can God really fix our mistakes if we step out and get it wrong?
This is where things shift. Because if God is as involved in our lives as we say He is, then He’s not limited by our imperfect steps. People in the Bible didn’t get everything right… not even close. But the Lord still led them, adjusted things, used what they did, even when it wasn’t flawless. That doesn’t mean we act carelessly, but it does mean we don’t have to be paralyzed by the fear of messing up.
5. What does it look like to grow in confidence when stepping out in faith?
It usually doesn’t happen all at once. It’s more like you take a step, realize you didn’t fall apart, and then take another. You start recognizing that even when things don’t go exactly how you thought they would, God is still there, still working, still guiding through the Holy Spirit. Over time, that builds something in you. Not perfection… just a steadier willingness to move forward without needing everything figured out first.

SCRIPTURE OF THE WEEK
If your brother sins against you, go and show him his fault, just between the two of you. If he listens to you, you have won your brother over.
