The One Step to Take After Hearing God—It Changes Everything

TODAY'S TEACHING

Ye shall walk after the Lord your God, and fear him, and keep his commandments, and obey his voice, and ye shall serve him, and cleave unto him.
 —Deuteronomy 13:4

If you want to hear from God, you’ve got to take the time to listen for His voice.

It’s not a passive or casual thing.

We have to actively tune in and be quick to obey when He speaks.

Every time we obey, our sensitivity to His voice grows

On the flip side, disobedience makes it harder to hear Him.

In fact, Jesus said in John 16:12 that He won't tell us more if He knows we won't receive it.

Hearing from God is like tuning a radio.

If you're not on the right frequency, it’s hard to catch the signal.

But the more you tune in, the clearer it becomes.

Lets face it, life doesn't make it easy to hear from God.

There are days when it feels like the world is against you before your feet hit the ground.

I remember waking up one morning, already feeling overwhelmed and irritated

It was one of those days when everything felt like a chore—impatience, stubbornness, laziness, frustration—the whole works.

“I’m not doing anything today,” I thought.

“I’m not tidying my office, I’m not shopping, I’m eating whatever I want, and I don’t care what anyone says about it.”

I just wanted to be left alone.

Sound familiar?

On days like these, we have a choice

We can follow our feelings and let them control us, or we can stop and ask for help

I remember sitting there, feeling frustrated, and finally praying, “God, please help me. I need Your help now.”

In that moment, I felt a shift like someone had lifted a weight off my shoulders.

My attitude didn’t magically change right away, but it was enough to resist my flesh, regain control, and not let the day spiral out of control.

I’m not proud to admit it, but I’ve had my share of “flesh days.”

You know the ones where you give in to selfishness and before you know it, it’s a snowball effect?

It just keeps getting worse.

But every time I choose obedience to God (no matter how small the step) it’s like I open a door for Him to bring in more light and instruction.

The more I listen and obey, the clearer the signal.

There was another time I really struggled to hear God’s voice about a specific decision

I felt like I was stuck, waiting for some big sign, but all I heard was silence

Then, I realized I was too wrapped up in my own negative thoughts to listen.

So, I made the decision to obey what I already knew God was saying in the small things and that was to just ask Him for wisdom (James 1:5).

I cast down those negative thoughts and sought His direction like His Word instructs.

As soon as I did, it was like everything clicked

The floodgates opened, and I started hearing His guidance more clearly.

Once you’ve experienced the joy of hearing God’s voice, it’s hard to go back.

It’s not always easy, but it’s always worth it.

Don’t let today be one of those “flesh days.”

After you hear from God, quickly take the step to obey what you know you should do, and you’ll hear God more and more.

Go ahead, try it for yourself

Watch how quickly God speaks to your heart when you consistently give Him your respect and your full attention.

If this resonates with you, here's a short prayer you can say today:

"Dear God, I come to You today needing for Your help. I know that when I listen to Your voice and quickly obey, I open the door to more of Your presence and guidance in my life. Please help me hear You clearly, and when I do, give me the strength to follow through fast, even when my feelings want to take over. Let my heart be quick to obey, Lord, so that I can experience the fullness of Your direction in every step I take. Amen."

God bless you!

DEVOTIONAL QUESTIONS

1. How can we become more attuned to hearing God’s voice in our daily lives?

We all have those moments where God’s voice feels distant, but the truth is, He’s always speaking—we just need to quiet down enough to hear it. It’s like trying to tune a radio; we’re often distracted, and the signal can get lost. To hear from God more, we need to create space for Him—turn off the noise, even just for a little while, and listen. The more we practice tuning in, the more we’ll hear His whispers.

2. What are some practical steps we can take to increase our sensitivity to God’s guidance?

It’s all about being faithful in the small things. Every little act of obedience brings us closer to hearing God more clearly. It's like taking baby steps on a path—you don’t have to get everything right at once, just keep moving forward. Start with the small things you know God is nudging you on, and the more you obey, the more you'll hear Him in the bigger moments.

3. How does our obedience—or lack of it—affect our ability to hear from God?

Obedience is like opening the door to God’s voice. When we obey, it’s like we’ve made room for Him to speak to us. If we don’t, it’s like we’ve closed the door or turned down the volume. Disobedience can make it harder to hear, because it builds walls between us and God. The more we choose obedience, even in little things, the clearer His voice becomes.

4. What are some common distractions that prevent us from listening to God, and how can we overcome them?

There’s no shortage of distractions, is there? From the noise of social media to the busyness of our lives, it’s easy to get caught up in everything except God’s voice. It’s like trying to hear a whisper when there’s a party going on around you. To get past that, we have to set aside intentional time to be with God. Unplug from everything, even if it’s just for a few minutes, and let Him speak. When we do that, we clear the space He needs to get through to us.

5. In what ways can we encourage one another to remain obedient to God’s voice, especially when it’s hard to follow through?

We’re all in this together, and sometimes it’s easy to lose our way. That’s when we need to lean on each other. When someone feels worn out or unsure, it helps so much to remind them of God’s faithfulness and encourage them to keep going. Being open about our own struggles makes it easier to lift each other up, and together, we can keep moving forward in obedience, even when it feels tough.
