The Right Atmosphere To Hear From God

Daily Effective Prayer Newsletter Issue 159

TODAY'S TEACHING

If it be possible, as much as lieth in you, live peaceably with all men.

- Romans 12:18

I vividly remember standing on the streets of downtown Manhattan and being amazed by the noise.

People everywhere were talking, street vendors were making sales, cars were honking, and there was so much commotion.

It was hard, at times, for my family to even communicate because we could barely hear one another.

Every day, life in general is loud and almost everything distracts us from pursuing God.

If we want to focus on God and hear from Him, we need to create an atmosphere that allows us to zero in on His voice.

We need to get to a place where we can silence the hustle and bustle and step into His presence.

If there is too much going on, we will more than likely find ourselves distracted and miss out on what God has to say to us.

When I say hearing from God requires the right "atmosphere", I'm talking about the environment we are in and the predominant attitude that we have.

Let me explain.

The atmosphere is created and influenced by the attitudes we have.

The two work together.

There are specific attitudes that will either enhance or hinder our ability to hear God's voice.

To hear from God, we need an attitude and atmosphere of peace.

Ever found yourself in an emotional and turbulent situation?

I know I have, and it's tough even to think straight.

I have to calm down first, get myself into a place of peacefulness, and then I can properly gather my thoughts.

Ever heard the phrase, "You can cut the tension with a knife"?

We can feel strife in a situation.

We can also recognize dissension bubbling up from within ourselves.

Likewise, we can also feel peace in situations.

And we can recognize when peacefulness is filling up in our hearts.

I'll say it again: both the atmosphere and our attitudes play a big part in hearing from our Heavenly Father.

Today's scripture instructs us to live peaceably with all men - as much as we can.

Hearing from God and living our best life is all about pursuing peace every day and in every way.

We must strive to create and maintain peaceful atmospheres and attitudes wherever we go because we will likely miss hearing from God in disruption, disorder, and other turbulent scenarios.

Negative attitudes like strife and dissension do not create an atmosphere in which we hear God clearly.

But He does speak in peaceful atmospheres where our hearts and minds are at peace.

To enjoy the fullness of God's presence every day, we need to consistently maintain the right peace-filled atmosphere around us and in our hearts, allowing for the lines of communication to remain open.

The truth is the moment we wake up, life comes at us fast.

There will always be opportunities we decide to take that have us stepping out of a place of peace, no matter how well we prepare for it.

However, the better we get at jumping back into a place of peacefulness as fast as possible, the better we get at continuing to hear from God.

We must yield all bad attitudes to the Lordship of Jesus Christ so we can help create atmospheres in which we can sense His presence and hear His divine guidance.

We must chase after, hunt down, and diligently pursue peace whenever we can.

If we do, this changes everything.

The ability to continually hear from God in every situation means He'll guide us through to victory every time.

Psalm 34:12-14 sums it up far better than I can.

"Who is someone who desires life, and loves many days, that he may see good? Keep your tongue from evil, and your lips from speaking lies. Depart from evil, and do good. Seek peace, and pursue it."

If this resonates with you, here's a short prayer you can say today:

"Heavenly Father, I step into Your presence today seeking Your peace. Help me to strive and remain in a place of tranquility so that I may hear Your voice clearly and receive Your divine guidance. Please calm my restless mind and heart, and grant me the wisdom to discern Your will amidst the noise and distractions of this world. I surrender my worries and anxieties to You, knowing that Your peace surpasses all understanding. In the Name of Jesus, I pray. Amen."

God bless you!

TODAY'S QUESTIONS

How can we practice letting go of resentment that may hinder peace in our relationships?

It is pivotal to rely on the guiding power of the Holy Spirit. This starts by surrendering our own desires and allowing the Spirit to work within us, helping us to let go of past hurts and grievances. We trust in the transformative power of the Spirit to heal our hearts and enable us to extend forgiveness to others. We seek the Holy Spirit's guidance and strength daily, as forgiveness is a continual practice that requires constant reliance on God's grace and love. We embrace the power of forgiveness as a reflection of God's mercy towards us and use it as a catalyst for reconciliation and restored peace in our relationships.

How can we cultivate empathy and seek to understand others?

We must first open our hearts and minds to let God lead us. With His power and guidance, we can develop a genuine desire to connect with others and show compassion. It starts by actively listening to others without judgment and trying to put ourselves in their shoes. We can practice patience and forgiveness, knowing that we have also made mistakes and need understanding. Prayer can be a powerful tool to ask for wisdom and guidance in our interactions with others, as we strive to mirror God's love and empathy in our own lives.

How can we communicate respectfully in order to maintain peaceful interactions?

It is crucial to approach conversations with empathy and open-mindedness. By actively listening to the concerns and perspectives of others, we can demonstrate respect and validate their feelings, even if we disagree. It is important to choose our words carefully and avoid confrontational language, instead opting for diplomatic and constructive communication. Seeking mutually beneficial solutions and finding common ground - if we can - will foster understanding and promote peaceful interactions.

How can we prioritize harmony and unity in order to promote peace?

It is important to cultivate humility and a spirit of selflessness. This involves letting go of the ego and valuing the well-being of the collective over personal agendas. It requires active listening, empathy, and a willingness to consider different perspectives. Seeking common ground and finding compromises can help build bridges and foster a peaceful and harmonious environment. By prioritizing peace above the desire to be right, we create space for understanding, compassion, and reconciliation.

How can we foster a mindset of peace internally in all situations?

By humbly recognizing our own limitations and surrendering our worries and anxieties to God through prayer, we can invite His peace to dwell within us. Intentional and regular meditation on the Scriptures and the truths of God's character can help align our thoughts with His and cultivate a mindset of peace. Self-reflection allows us to identify areas of our lives where we may be contributing to internal unrest and gives us the opportunity to surrender those areas to God as well. As we consistently practice these disciplines, the peace of God will not only transform our hearts and minds but will also overflow into our relationships and interactions with others, bringing light and hope to all situations we encounter.
