You’re God’s Child… But Are You Also His Friend?

TODAY'S TEACHING
The Lord said, “Shall I keep secret from Abraham [My friend and servant] what I am going to do?
—Genesis 18:17
It's one thing to know God as your Creator. It's another thing to know Him as your Father. But have you ever stopped to think about something even more personal than that?
What if the Lord wants to be your friend?
That thought sat with me for a long time. I knew God loved me because the Bible said so. I knew Jesus died for me. I knew I belonged to Him. Yet somewhere along the way, I quietly settled into treating prayer like an appointment instead of a conversation. I talked... then hurried away before my heart ever became still enough to listen.
Abraham had something different.
Scripture doesn't only call him faithful. More than once, it calls him the friend of God. That's remarkable. Out of all the descriptions God could have chosen, friendship is one He wanted us to remember.
Friendship changes everything.
When the Lord was preparing to judge Sodom and Gomorrah, He chose to tell Abraham what He was about to do. That wasn't because Abraham had earned secret information. It was because friends share their hearts. Genesis gives us a beautiful glimpse of that relationship, where God speaks openly, and Abraham responds with surprising honesty, asking, "Wilt thou also destroy the righteous with the wicked?" (Genesis 18:23).
Notice what Abraham didn't do.
He didn't approach God like someone trying to sneak into a king's courtroom hoping not to be noticed. He came near. He asked questions. He pleaded for people. He spoke with deep respect, yes, but also with remarkable confidence because he knew the One he was speaking to.
That's what friendship looks like.
A man once shared with me how he prayed every single morning before work. His prayers were sincere, but they all sounded almost identical. He thanked God, asked for protection, prayed for his family, said amen, grabbed his coffee, and rushed out the door.
One Saturday morning, he wasn't in a hurry.
He sat on the back porch while the neighborhood was still quiet. His coffee had already gone cold because he kept forgetting to drink it. Instead of filling every second with words, he simply sat there and whispered, "Lord... what do You want to say today?"
Nothing spectacular happened.
There wasn't a booming voice from Heaven. There wasn't some overwhelming emotional experience. But as he opened his Bible a few minutes later, one verse seemed to settle into his heart differently than it ever had before. He told me later, "For the first time, I realized I wasn't just trying to get something from God. I was spending time with Someone who genuinely wanted to spend time with me."
That changed the way he prayed from then on.
Sometimes we unknowingly reduce God to Someone we only approach when we need answers, healing, provision, or rescue. Those things matter. The Lord invites us to bring every need before Him. But friendship isn't built only around requests. Friendship grows through presence.
That's exactly what the Lord has always wanted.
From the beginning of creation, the Lord desired fellowship with His people. Sin interrupted that closeness, but Jesus came to restore what had been broken. Through His Cross and His Resurrection, the invitation was opened once again. Not merely to receive forgiveness, but to walk closely with God every single day.
Think about that for a moment.
The Creator of the universe isn't tolerating your presence. He's inviting it.
He isn't rolling His eyes every time you come to Him with another question, another weakness, another fear. He delights when His children draw near because relationship has always been His desire.
James writes, "Draw nigh to God, and he will draw nigh to you." (James 4:8). That's not just a command. It's an invitation. Every step we take toward the Lord is met by His welcoming heart.
Maybe you've known about God for years, but you've never slowed down enough to simply enjoy Him. Maybe your prayers have become routine, your Bible reading has become another item to check off, or you've quietly believed intimacy with God is only for pastors, missionaries, or the "super spiritual."
It isn't.
It's for you.
Today, don't settle for knowing facts about God when He's inviting you into genuine friendship with Him. Speak honestly. Listen patiently. Laugh with Him. Cry before Him. Bring Him your questions, your gratitude, your confusion, and your ordinary moments. The Lord isn't looking for polished conversations. He's looking for an open heart.
The same God who called Abraham His friend still desires that kind of closeness with His children today, and because of Jesus, that invitation has your name on it. Walk into His presence with confidence, stay there a little longer than usual, and discover what happens when your relationship with God becomes more than duty... it becomes friendship.
If this resonates with you, here's a short prayer you can say today:
"Dear God, thank You that through Jesus I don't have to stand far away wondering if I'm welcome in Your presence. Sometimes I still come to You carefully, almost like I'm afraid of saying the wrong thing, but You're patiently teaching me that You want my heart more than polished words, so help me trust that invitation a little more every day. Keep pulling me closer until talking with You becomes as natural as breathing, and remind me often that I'm not just Your child... You've invited me into friendship with You. Amen."
God bless you!
Your brother in Christ,

DEVOTIONAL QUESTIONS
1. What does it really mean to be a friend of God?
Being God's friend doesn't mean we lose our reverence for Him. The Lord is still holy, all-powerful, and worthy of our worship, but He also invites us into a close and personal relationship. Abraham approached the Lord with deep respect, yet he spoke honestly because he knew he was loved. We can have that same confidence today, knowing Jesus has opened the way for us to draw near. Friendship with the Lord grows as we spend time with Him, trust Him, and learn to recognize His voice.
2. Why do so many Christians struggle to experience intimacy with God?
Many of us know about God long before we truly know Him personally. We attend church, read the Bible, and pray, yet we can quietly slip into treating our relationship with the Lord like another responsibility instead of a friendship. Sometimes fear tells us we're bothering God, while shame tells us we're not worthy to come close. The truth is, the Lord has already invited us near through Jesus, and He delights when we spend time with Him simply because we love Him.
3. How does a Christian develop a closer friendship with the Lord?
Friendships don't become deep overnight and our relationship with God grows the same way. The more we talk with the Lord throughout the day, read His Word, listen for His direction, and obey what He places on our hearts, the more natural that friendship becomes. There isn't a secret formula or perfect schedule. It's simply choosing, day after day, to make room for the One who has always wanted to walk closely with us.
4. Why did Abraham have such confidence when speaking with God?
Abraham understood something many of us are still learning. He knew the Lord's character. Because he trusted God's goodness, he wasn't afraid to ask difficult questions or pour out his heart honestly. His confidence wasn't rooted in his own perfection but in his relationship with the Lord, and that's exactly the kind of relationship God desires for each of us through Jesus Christ.
5. What changes when we begin treating God as our closest friend?
Life doesn't suddenly become easy, but it becomes very different. Instead of carrying every burden by ourselves, we begin sharing everything with the Lord, from the biggest decisions to the smallest concerns. We become quicker to pray, quicker to listen, and quicker to trust because we're no longer approaching a distant God but a loving Friend who walks beside us every step of the way. As that friendship deepens, peace grows, fear loses its grip, and our confidence in the Lord becomes stronger than our confidence in ourselves.
