Why Obeying God When It Doesn’t Make Sense Is So Important

TODAY'S TEACHING

Trust in the Lord with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths. —Proverbs 3:5-6

You know, one of the reasons God speaks to us is to help us make the right decisions in life.

He helps us see what’s right and wrong, but here’s the thing: what might be wrong for one person could be fine for someone else.

That’s why it’s so important to hear God’s personal guidance.

Sure, there are basic truths we all know—like that lying and stealing are wrong—but then there are those little nudges, the ones that only God can give you, the ones He speaks directly into your heart.

I’ve been there.

I’ve had to make decisions where everyone around me thought it was a no-brainer

But something, rather Someone, inside me said, "Hold up."

Everyone else was all in, but I felt God saying, "Not this time."

I didn’t understand it at the moment.

It didn't make any sense.

Everything looked good, and everyone else was doing it.

But because I’d learned to listen to that still, small voice, I obeyed

And you know what?

The peace I felt afterward was worth more than I could have imagined.

God has a unique plan for each one of us.

There are things God knows about you that you don’t even know about yourself.

So when He tells you to wait or not do something that everyone else is doing, it’s not because He’s trying to make your life harder.

It’s because He knows what’s best for you.

It’s not always easy to trust that, especially when it seems like everyone else is going in a different direction.

But if we keep our hearts open, we’ll learn that obedience, even when it doesn’t make sense, always leads us to the right place.

Here’s the thing: we don’t always need to know the “why” behind what God asks us to do.

Think about soldiers in training.

They’re asked to do things that seem pointless at first.

But they obey, because they know that one day, in battle, hesitation could cost them their life.

In the same way, God wants us to trust Him without second-guessing

When He speaks, it’s not always time to ask "why," but to step forward in faith.

I remember a time I had to make a decision fast.

I didn’t have all the answers, but I knew God was telling me to move.

It didn’t make sense at the time, but I did it.

And in the end, everything worked out just like He said it would.

That’s what obedience looks like.

It’s trusting God's heart, even when we don’t understand His hand.

So, let’s not overcomplicate it.

We don’t need all the answers.

We just need to hear God’s voice and obey, no matter what.

The more we learn to trust Him, the more we’ll see how He’s been leading us all along.

Even when it doesn’t make sense, His way is always the best way.

If this resonates with you, here's a short prayer you can say today:

"Dear God, sometimes it feels like I’m walking in the dark, not understanding why You ask me to do something that makes no sense. But I know that obedience is a key that unlocks Your perfect plan for my life, even when I can't see the path ahead. Help me trust Your wisdom and love, even when my heart wants to question why. I believe that when I obey, even without understanding, I’m choosing the best way, Your way. Amen."

God bless you!

DEVOTIONAL QUESTIONS

1. How can Christians strengthen our ability to trust God's direction when we don't fully understand His plans for us?

We trust God more by leaning on Him through the small steps, even when we can’t see the whole picture. It’s like being in a dark room and having to trust the light switch will work, even if you can’t see the whole room yet. The more we follow, even when it doesn’t make sense, the more we begin to trust He’s got the bigger picture in mind. It might feel shaky at first, but each step with God builds a stronger foundation of trust.

2. What does it look like for Believers to obey God in our everyday lives, even when everyone around us is making different choices?

Obeying God daily means doing the right thing, even when no one else is. It’s like being the only one not jumping into the deep end because you know God is saying “wait.” It doesn’t always make sense to others, and you might feel out of place, but that’s where obedience shines. Whether it’s sticking to your values at work or being kind when the world is quick to judge, it’s about following His voice above all else.

3. Why is it important for Christians to listen to God's voice and obey, even if we don’t have all the answers right away?

Listening to God and obeying without all the answers is about trust. Think about it: you follow a leader on a road trip even if they don’t give you every detail, right? It’s knowing they know the way better than you. With God, it’s the same. Sometimes we just need to follow His lead, trusting He has a plan even if we can’t see the whole map yet.

4. How can we cultivate a heart of obedience, especially when God’s instructions don’t align with our personal logic or desires?

We cultivate a heart of obedience by staying close to Him, praying about our doubts, and choosing to trust Him even when it feels uncomfortable. Our human side might say, "But that doesn’t make sense!"... but deep down, we know God’s way will always work out for our good. It’s like following a coach who asks us to do drills we don’t understand. Eventually, we trust their strategy, even when we don’t get it at first.

5. What examples from Scripture can a Christian draw from to help us trust God’s timing and obey Him without hesitation, even when it seems hard?

One example that always stands out to me is Abraham. God told him to sacrifice his son Isaac, and even though it didn’t make sense, Abraham obeyed. That level of trust is mind-blowing. Then, of course, there’s Jesus in Gethsemane, saying, “Not my will, but Yours be done.” Both stories remind us that, even when it’s tough, obedience brings us closer to God's perfect plan for us.
