Hearing God Is Simple… So Why Do So Many Struggle?

TODAY'S TEACHING
The counsel of the Lord standeth for ever, the thoughts of his heart to all generations.
—Psalm 33:11
You want to hear from God every day. You can. It starts with a simple, quiet habit that looks small on the surface but steers the whole ship underneath.
Listening sounds simple, and it is. But simple things can leak through the cracks when we’re rushing. What’s easy to do is just as easy to skip.
Prayer isn’t a monologue where we talk until we’re out of breath. It’s a table for two. We speak, then we lean in and let the Father answer in the way He chooses.
Waiting on God isn’t hours of straining to catch a voice. It’s admitting we can’t do this right without Him. That humility opens doors our hustle can’t even find.
We don’t sprint in our own strength, making noise and calling it progress. We ask for leadership, and God gives it. Not always with headlines, but with a steady nudge on the heart by His Spirit.
I’ve learned to trust that nudge. Not fireworks. More like a compass that keeps pointing north when my plans wander.
Here’s a story. Mia had her Sunday mapped out. There was church, brunch with friends, then a stack of errands. While getting prepared to head out the door, she felt a quiet pull to stop by her elderly neighbor’s apartment first.
It made no sense to her schedule. She went anyway, small knock, awkward smile. The door opened to a tearful woman who’d just received hard news and didn’t want to be alone.
They sat at her kitchen table with chipped blue mugs. Mia listened, prayed, and helped call a daughter who lived out of town. No spotlight. No applause. Just God’s kindness wearing ordinary clothes.
Later, her day still worked out. Not as planned, better. The errands shrank, the peace grew, and Mia went to bed with that deep-in-the-bones knowing, I followed Him today.
That’s how guidance often comes. Not a booming command, but a settled sense. A turn here, a pause there, a call you wouldn’t have made if you’d stayed married to your To-Do list.
So make your plans, then hold them with open hands. Tell God to lead you, and mean it. If He changes your heart, change your plans.
Trust Him to surprise you. Maybe it’s an assignment you’d miss if you were busy proving you’re in control. Maybe it’s an adventure wrapped in interruption.
Stop long enough to listen when you pray. Give God the first word and the last. And walk out what you hear, one obedient step at a time.
If this resonates with you, here's a short prayer you can say today:
"Dear God, quiet the noise around me so I can hear the whisper within. I don’t want to rush past what You’re trying to say while chasing what feels urgent. Help me lean in, listen closely, and notice the gentle nudge of Your Spirit guiding my next step. When the world shouts, remind me that Your voice never competes. It invites and it's up to me to follow. Amen."
God bless you!

Daniel

DEVOTIONAL QUESTIONS
1. Are Christians making room to listen, or are we rushing out the door with a to-do list in one hand and a prayer in the other?
When we slow down and listen, even for a few quiet minutes, the clutter settles like dust. We breathe, we open Scripture, and we ask simple questions like, “God, what are You saying today?” We pay attention to nudges, not just fireworks. Like tuning a radio, the signal clears when we stop flipping stations and sit with it for a while.
2. What noise keeps drowning out God’s whisper in our week, and what are we willing to turn down?
We all carry noise, from endless scrolling to the drumbeat of worry. If we fast from a little noise, we usually find a lot of clarity. It can be as small as leaving the phone in another room or walking without earbuds and inviting God into that space. Quiet isn’t empty. It is a doorway where peace gets our attention and truth has room to land.
3. Does a Christian recognize how God often speaks, so they don’t miss it looking for something louder?
God’s voice is steady, never pushy, shaped by Scripture, and full of grace and truth. It corrects without shaming, leads without shoving, and points us toward love, humility, and obedience. Think green lights and gentle course corrections, not sirens. If it contradicts the Bible or inflates our pride, that is our cue to pause and test it.
4. Are Believers willing to obey the small promptings we already know, before we ask for a bigger word?
Often the next step is ordinary faithfulness, not a grand reveal. We forgive, we apologize, we give, we serve, we choose honesty when no one is watching. Obedience turns the volume up. Like a compass, the needle steadies as we walk in the light we have, and more light tends to follow that. Remember, Abram? Once he followed God's first command to leave his homeland, family, and father's house in Haran, He revealed more. One step at a time.
5. How will we practice and remember, so our listening muscle grows instead of shrinking?
We can keep a simple journal of what we’re sensing and what Scriptures stand out, then note what happens when we act on it. We invite trusted believers to weigh in, because wise counsel can keep us from blind spots. Over time patterns emerge, peace confirms direction, and our ears get trained. Hearing God really is simple, but it grows best when we keep showing up to listen together.

SCRIPTURE OF THE WEEK
One man considers one day more sacred than another; another man considers every day alike. Each one should be fully convinced in his own mind.
