4 Things You Didn’t Know Could Break God’s Heart
TODAY'S TEACHING
Be kind and helpful to one another, tender-hearted [compassionate, understanding], forgiving one another [readily and freely], just as God in Christ also forgave [a]you. - Ephesians 4:32
Holding onto unforgiveness is like carrying around a heavy backpack filled with rocksโyouโre the one weighed down, not the person who hurt you.
Godโs pretty clear on this: if we want to walk in the fullness of His blessings, we need to love and forgive others.
Ephesians 4:30-32 tells us that when we cling onto things like anger, resentment, offense, and bitterness, we grieve the Holy Spirit.
Another way to say that is these 4 things "break" God's heart.
Itโs like putting up a wall that blocks us from clearly hearing Godโs voice and recognizing His presence in our lives.
I remember a time in my own life when I struggled with unforgiveness.
There was a close friend who hurt me deeply, and I couldn't seem to let the offense go.
Every time I saw this person, I felt a knot in my stomach, a tightening in my chest because I was straight up bitter towards them.
I kept replaying the hurtful words and actions over and over in my mind, like a broken record.
It was exhausting because I resented what happened, and I was angry about.
One day, I came across that powerful truth: holding onto unforgiveness is like drinking poison and expecting the other person to suffer.
It hit me hard.
Here I was, consumed with bitterness, while my friend seemed completely oblivious and happy.
It was like I was carrying around this heavy, invisible weight, and it was affecting every part of my life.
I couldnโt focus, I couldnโt pray properly, and I definitely stumbled hearing Godโs voice.
It felt like there was a wall between us, and it was all because of the grudge I was holding onto.
Then one Sunday morning, sitting in church, I felt a nudge in my heart.
It was like God was gently saying, โItโs time to let this go. Youโre only hurting yourself.โ
I realized I had been holding onto this pain as if it gave me some sort of power or control, but in reality, it was controlling me.
So, I decided to forgive, even though I didn't feel like it.
It wasnโt easy, and it didnโt happen overnight.
I had to consciously choose to forgive every time those feelings of anger and resentment crept back in.
But you know what?
As I began to let go, I felt lighter.
The wall between me and God started to crumble, and I could feel His peace washing over me.
It was like a fresh breeze blowing away the heaviness in my heart.
Forgiving my friend didnโt change what happened, but it changed me.
It opened up space for joy, for peace, and for a deeper connection with God.
So, hereโs a little secret: forgiveness isnโt really only about the other personโitโs also about freeing yourself.
When you choose to forgive, youโre not saying that what they did was okay, but youโre deciding not to let it control you anymore.
Youโre giving yourself the gift of peace, making space in your heart for Godโs love and guidance.
So, go ahead, lighten your loadโdrop those rocks, and let Godโs grace fill the space theyโve been occupying.
If this resonates with you, here's a short prayer you can say today:
"Dear God, I come to You with a heart that's been weighed down by unforgiveness, like carrying around a backpack full of stones. I know holding onto this is like drinking poison, expecting it to hurt someone else, but it's only hurting me. Please help me to drop these rocks and release the bitterness, letting Your peace and grace flood in like a fresh breeze. Teach me to forgive as You've forgiven me, and to live free, light, and full of Your joy. Amen."
God bless you!

TODAY'S QUESTIONS
1. How can holding onto unforgiveness affect a Christian's spiritual growth and relationship with God?
When we hold onto unforgiveness, it's like building a wall between us and God. We might think we're protecting ourselves, but in reality, we're blocking His love and grace from fully flowing into our lives. Itโs like trying to listen to a beautiful melody with earplugs inโwe miss the fullness of the experience. Unforgiveness keeps our hearts hard, making it difficult to grow spiritually and to hear God's gentle voice guiding us. It's essential to remember that just as we need oxygen to breathe, we need forgiveness to thrive in our walk with Christ.
2. What biblical teachings emphasize the importance of forgiving others, and how do these teachings guide Christians in their daily lives?
The Bible is full of teachings on forgiveness, and theyโre not just suggestions. Many overlook that theyโre commands straight from God's heart. Jesus taught us to pray, "Forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us," which isn't just a nice sentimentโitโs a daily challenge to let go of grudges and extend grace. Ephesians 4:32, our scripture for today, tells us to be kind and compassionate, forgiving each other just as Christ forgave us. This isnโt always easy, but these teachings guide us to live in harmony with others and to reflect God's love and mercy in all our relationships. It's like being a mirror, reflecting the light we receive from God onto everyone around us.
3. How does the analogy of "drinking poison and expecting the other person to suffer" help illustrate the consequences of harboring unforgiveness?
The analogy of drinking poison while expecting the other person to suffer perfectly illustrates the self-destructive nature of unforgiveness. It's like holding onto a hot coal with the intent of throwing it at someone else, but, in the end, weโre the ones who get burned. When we cling to resentment and bitterness, weโre the ones who sufferโphysically, emotionally, and spiritually. This poison seeps into every part of our lives, robbing us of peace and joy, and even affecting our health. We must remember that forgiving others is more about freeing ourselves from this toxic burden than it is about the other person deserving it.
4. In what ways can Believers seek and find the strength to forgive those who have hurt them, even in difficult situations?
Finding the strength to forgive, especially when the wound is deep, can feel impossible. But we don't have to do it alone. God's grace is like a well that never runs dry, offering us the strength we need. Sometimes, it's about praying, "Lord, I don't have the strength to forgive, but I know You do. Help me." It's also helpful to remember that forgiveness is a process, not a one-time event. It's like peeling an onion, layer by layer. Each step we take brings us closer to healing. Surrounding ourselves with supportive, loving Believers can also provide the encouragement we need on this journey.
5. How can practicing forgiveness lead to a deeper sense of peace and clarity in hearing God's voice and following His guidance?
Practicing forgiveness is like clearing out a cluttered room. Once the mess is gone, there's space for new things to flourish. When we forgive, we remove the barriers that block us from experiencing God's peace and clearly hearing His voice. It's like tuning into a clear radio signal after dealing with static for so long. This newfound clarity opens our hearts to His guidance, allowing us to walk in His will with confidence and joy. Forgiveness is not just a gift to othersโitโs a gift to ourselves, freeing us from the chains of the past and leading us into a life filled with God's abundant blessings.
