Why Getting Closer To God Makes Your Heart’s Desires Come True

Daily Effective Prayer Newsletter Issue 201.

TODAY'S TEACHING

I do nothing of Myself (of My own accord or on My own authority), but I say [exactly] what My Father has taught Me. —John 8:28

There have been times when I’ve asked God, “What should I do in this situation?”

And His answer, surprisingly, has always been, “Do whatever you want.”

At first, I thought, "Wait, what? Are You sure about that?"

It felt too good to be true

But over time, I’ve realized that the more we grow in our relationship with God, the more freedom He gives us.

The closer we get to Him, the more He trusts us with the freedom to make decisions.

I remember one specific time when I was facing a big decision—something that felt unsettling

I prayed, asking God for clear direction, almost begging Him to give me an answer that would make the choice obvious

Instead, I felt a calm whisper in my spirit: “Do what you believe is best.”

I wrestled with it for a while.

I thought, "What if I make the wrong choice?"

But as I walked in the freedom of that moment, trusting His guidance, I found that I was more in sync with His will than I realized.

The decision I made turned out to be exactly what God had in mind.

It wasn’t that He wasn’t leading me—He was, but He was giving me the freedom to follow His heart, because I had learned to know His voice.

Think about how a child learns to make choices

When they’re little, they don’t have the wisdom to make good decisions, so their parents do everything for them.

But as they grow, their parents gradually give them more freedom because they begin to understand their parent's heart.

The child knows what their parents value, what they believe in, and what they desire

And with that understanding, they make choices that honor the parents without even thinking about it.

The same happens in our walk with God.

As we spend time with Him through His Word and prayer, we start to know His heart more and more.

We grow to understand His character, His nature, His desires

And over time, our desires begin to match His

It's like we start thinking and acting in harmony with Him.

The freedom we experience isn’t just the freedom to do whatever we want—it’s the freedom to choose what aligns with His heart.

As we mature spiritually, we want to reflect God’s heart in everything.

Our desires change

They merge with His.

We no longer make decisions based on selfish ambition or personal gain, but from a place of wanting to honor Him.

As today's scriptures reveals, Jesus lived this way—He only did what He saw the Father doing and said what He heard Him saying.

And that’s the kind of relationship I truly long for with my Heavenly Father.

A deep, intimate connection where my desires and God's desires are one and the same.

So, seek that closeness with God even more than you are now.

Strive for that oneness where your desires aren’t driven by your own will, but by His.

Let His heart become your heart, and watch how the desires of your life fall into place.

If this resonates with you, here's a short prayer you can say today:

"Dear God, I want to draw closer to You—closer than I’ve ever been before. Help me to hear Your voice so clearly that my desires line up with Yours, like a river flowing into the ocean, perfectly aligned with Your will. As I grow in knowing Your heart, let me experience the freedom that comes from trusting You completely. Teach me to walk in the liberty You give, so my every choice reflects Your love, integrity, and truth. Amen."

God bless you!

TODAY'S QUESTIONS

1. How can Christians grow closer to God so that our desires align more fully with His will?

To grow closer to God, we have to make time for Him. It’s like building a relationship with anyone. If we don’t spend time with them, we’ll never really get to know them. Prayer, reading Scripture, worship, and quiet moments of reflection are all ways to draw near to God. The more we seek Him, the more we begin to understand His heart. And as we understand His heart, our desires naturally start to align with His.

2. What steps can we take to deepen our understanding of God's heart and character?

To understand God's heart, we need to pay attention to His Word and the way He moves in our lives. Think of it like learning to read a love letter, it takes time and attention. We can read the Bible with a hunger to know more of who He is, asking the Holy Spirit to reveal His character to us. Spending time with God isn’t just about asking for things—it’s about listening, waiting, and allowing His character to shape us from the inside out.

3. In what ways does God’s freedom challenge Believers to trust Him with the decisions we make?

God’s freedom can feel scary at first. We’re used to having all the answers laid out for us, but when God gives us freedom, it’s like He’s asking us to step out into the unknown. But in that freedom, we find trust. God isn’t setting us loose without guidance—He’s trusting that, as we grow in knowing His heart, we’ll make choices that honor Him. It’s like learning to ride a bike. At first, we might wobble, but the more we trust and lean into Him, the more confident we become in making decisions that reflect His will.

4. How can we distinguish between our own desires and God's desires as we grow spiritually?

As we grow spiritually, it becomes easier to tell the difference because our hearts start to change. It’s like when you’ve been around someone for so long that you start finishing their sentences—you know them that well. The more we seek God’s heart and get to know His character through prayer and time in the scriptures, the more our desires start to mirror His. If we’re truly walking in the Spirit, we’ll find that our desires naturally align with God’s, because we’ll desire what He desires: love, grace, peace, and truth.

5. What are some practical ways Christians can reflect God's heart in our everyday choices?

Reflecting God’s heart in our everyday choices starts with small acts of obedience. It’s about checking our attitudes, our words, and our actions to see if they line up with what God would do. Whether it’s showing kindness to a stranger, forgiving someone who’s wronged us, or taking time to help someone in need, these little things are opportunities to reflect God’s love. It’s not about being perfect—it’s about choosing to honor God in every moment, even in the mundane because we love Him.

Instead, they were longing for a better country — a heavenly one. Therefore God is not ashamed to be called their God, for he has prepared a city for them.
