Why Time In Scripture Shields You From Deception
TODAY'S TEACHING
Test and prove all things [until you can recognize] what is good; [to that] hold fast. โ1 Thessalonians 5:21
If we want to hear from God clearly and avoid deception, we've got to make spending regular time with Him and learning His Word a top priority.
Imagine trying to navigate through a dense fog without a mapโlistening for God's voice without knowing His Word is just like that.
Itโs not only unwise, but itโs also downright dangerous.
Godโs written Word is our protection, our shield against the lies and schemes that the enemy loves to throw our way.
You see, trying to hear from God without first grounding ourselves in His Word is like building a house on sandโit's irresponsible, and it sets us up for failure.
The devil is crafty, and heโs always ready to whisper sweet-sounding lies and partial truths into eager ears.
But look at Jesusโevery time the devil tried to trip Him up by using partially true scripture, Jesus responded with, "It is written," and then accurately quoted God's Word to shut the enemy's strategy down (Luke 4).
Thatโs the power of knowing the Word and rightly dividing it.
Now, some folks only turn to God when theyโre in a tight spot, desperate for a way out.
But here's the thingโif youโre not in the habit of hearing from God in your everyday life, recognizing His voice in a crisis can feel like trying to pick out a familiar face in a crowded room.
You need to know His voice before the storm hits.
Itโs crucial that we compare every thought, every prompting, every prophecy, and every single piece of advice we get with Godโs Word.
If weโre not rooted in the Word, weโve got nothing to measure these things against.
The enemy loves to drop ideas into our minds that sound good on the surface, but just because something makes sense or feels right doesnโt mean itโs from God.
It might appeal to our emotions, but if it doesnโt bring peace and line up with scripture, itโs not from God.
Remember, Godโs advice is simpleโfollow peace.
Let it rule like an umpire in your life, as Colossians 3:15 AMP tells us.
Let me share a personal story that really drove this truth home for me.
Years ago, I was going through a season where I was desperate to hear from God about a big decision I had to make.
I prayed, I fasted, and I did everything I thought would get me an answer.
But you know what I wasnโt doing consistently?
Spending time in Godโs Word.
I figured that if I just prayed enough, Iโd hear something.
I was so eager to hear Godโs voice that I was willing to grasp at anything that seemed like a sign.
One day, after weeks of feeling frustrated and confused, I thought I finally heard somethingโa thought popped into my head that sounded logical, even good.
It made sense to me, so I ran with it.
But as soon as I started moving forward with this "answer," something just didnโt sit right.
There was no peace, just a gnawing feeling in my spirit that I was off track.
I tried to ignore it, convincing myself that it must be from God because it seemed so reasonable.
But then, in the middle of all this, I stumbled across a verse during a rare moment when I actually opened my Bible.
It was a scripture that contradicted what I thought Iโd heard.
Suddenly, it hit meโif I had been in the Word consistently, I would have recognized that this thought wasnโt from God much sooner.
I realized that I had been setting myself up for deception by neglecting the very thing that could protect meโGodโs Word.
That experience was a turning point for me.
It showed me just how crucial it is to be grounded in Scripture if Iโm going to hear Godโs voice clearly.
The enemy is always out there, ready to feed us lies that sound good but lead us down the wrong path.
But when we know Godโs Word, we can spot those lies a mile away.
So now, whenever Iโm seeking Godโs guidance, I make sure that Iโm rooted in His Word first.
Iโve learned the hard way that thereโs no shortcut to hearing Godโs voiceโHis Word is the foundation.
And when Iโm grounded in that, I can trust that the direction Iโm hearing is His, and I can move forward with confidence and peace.
So, test everything you hear against the Word of God, because thatโs the only standard of truth.
Thereโs no substitute for it.
If Jesus used scripture against the enemy, how much more do we need to do the same?
If you want to stay on the right path and hear Godโs voice with clarity, dive into His Word and make it the foundation of your life.
Itโs the only way to avoid being led astray.
If this resonates with you, here's a short prayer you can say today:
"Heavenly Father, I come to You, hungry for Your truth, and ready to soak up every word Youโve written for me. Help me to carve out time to dive deep into Scripture, where Your voice rings clear, cutting through the noise and lies that try to mislead me. Donโt let me wander off, chasing directions that arenโt from Youโground me in Your Word, so Iโm standing firm on the solid rock of Your truth. Thank You for guiding me, protecting me, and always speaking life into my heart. Amen."
God bless you!

TODAY'S QUESTIONS
1. How does spending regular time in Scripture strengthen a Believerโs ability to discern Godโs voice from other influences?
Spending regular time in Scripture is like tuning our spiritual ears to the right frequency (I say this all the time). You know how, when you listen to a radio, youโve got to adjust the dial just right to hear the station clearly? Itโs the same with Godโs voice. The more we dive into His Word, the more familiar we become with the sound of His truth. It sharpens our discernment, so when other voices try to sneak in and lead us astray, we recognize theyโre off-key. Weโre all in this together, learning to fine-tune our hearts to hear Him clearly. It takes time and discipline, so be consistent in studying God's Word and patient.
2. What specific verses or passages can Christians rely on to combat deception and confirm they are hearing from God?
When it comes to combating deception, Scripture is our go-to defense, like a sword that cuts through the fog of confusion. Passages like Psalm 119:105, where it says, โYour word is a lamp for my feet, a light on my path,โ remind us that Godโs Word illuminates our way, showing us whatโs true and whatโs not. And remember how Jesus Himself used Scripture to refute the devilโs lies in Matthew 4? He is our example to follow and those same verses are available to us, empowering us to stand firm when the enemy tries to deceive us. Weโve got these spiritual weapons, and itโs up to us to use them according to God's Word.
3. In what ways might neglecting Scripture lead to spiritual confusion or susceptibility to false teachings?
Neglecting Scripture is like walking through life without a compassโsoon enough, weโre lost, wandering in circles, and susceptible to all sorts of misleading paths. Without that steady anchor of Godโs Word, weโre vulnerable to every wind of doctrine that blows our way. False teachings sound enticing, but without the truth of Scripture to measure them against, they can pull us off course before we even realize it. We need to stay grounded in the Word, rightfully dividing it, so we donโt drift into spiritual confusion.
4. How can Christians develop a habit of consistently comparing their thoughts, decisions, and spiritual experiences with Godโs Word?
Developing the habit of comparing our thoughts, decisions, and experiences with Godโs Word is like building spiritual muscleโit takes consistent effort, but the rewards are worth it. Start small, with baby steps. Before making decisions, pause and ask, โWhat does Godโs Word say about this?โ Make it a daily practice, like brushing your teethโsomething you donโt even think twice about doing. As we do this, it becomes second nature, and we find ourselves naturally aligning our lives with Godโs truth and easily avoiding deception.
5. What practical steps can be taken to deepen one's understanding of Scripture, ensuring that it becomes a reliable foundation for recognizing Godโs direction?
To deepen our understanding of Scripture, weโve got to treat it like food for our soulsโsomething we canโt go without (Matthew 4:4). Start by setting aside a specific time each day to read and meditate on the Word, even if itโs just a few verses. Join a Bible study group, because thereโs power in learning together, sharpening one another. Use tools like commentaries, online scriptures, or devotionals to dig deeper, and donโt be afraid to ask God to reveal His truth to you as you read. Letโs commit to this journey together, building a foundation so strong that when God speaks, we hear Him loud and clear, and we stand firm against any deception and confusion.

Scripture Of The Week
Jesus straightened up and asked [the woman caught in the act of adultery], "Woman, where are they? Has no one condemned you?"
"No one, sir," she said.
"Then neither do I condemn you," Jesus declared. "Go now and leave your life of sin."
