This Is How God Warns You Before Trouble Hits (Many Miss It)

TODAY'S TEACHING
And the peace of God, which passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.
—Philippians 4:7
I’ve taught on this before, but it’s worth repeating. God leads by peace. When you find yourself in a situation where His peace lifts, pay very close attention.
Think of peace like a traffic light in your spirit. Green means go. That yellow churn in your gut? Slow down, and check your heart again quickly.
If you’re halfway through a streaming a movie and your peace drops like a rock, that’s God whispering, “Turn it off.” He’s not spoiling your fun. He’s guarding your heart.
Same with words. You say something sharp, and suddenly your insides start scratching you (we've all been there). That’s your divine cue to own it fast. Quickly say, “I’m sorry. I was wrong. Please forgive me.”
God wants in on everyday choices, not just the big, churchy ones. He approves by giving peace and warns by withdrawing it. Simple, but not always easy.
Peace is the umpire in your heart, calling balls and strikes (Colossians 3:15). When He says “Out,” don’t argue with Him. Step back, reset, and obey.
Here’s a story. Jordan was a young dad who got a great job offer... more money, better title, sounded perfect on paper. But every time he tried to sign the contract, his chest tightened like a shoe two sizes too small.
He prayed, waited, and turned it down. Friends thought he was crazy. Months later, that company folded, and Jordan ended up in a steadier role that let him make it to his daughter’s soccer games.
God’s peace is a compass that points you home. It won’t lie to you. It’ll nudge, nudge, and nudge, until you either obey or you don’t. Many Christians seem to miss this.
The Bible says, “Strive to live in peace with everyone, and pursue holiness” (Hebrews 12:14). That means you send the apology text first. You walk away from a fight you could win but shouldn’t.
Following peace won’t make life boring. It’ll make it blessed. It keeps you out of trouble you didn’t even see coming (trust me).
So today, let God's peace call the plays even more. If it’s there, proceed. If it’s gone, pivot. God’s leading is often that quiet yes or that holy unsettledness that says, “Not this. Not now.”
If this resonates with you, here's a short prayer you can say today:
"Dear God, when Your peace settles or suddenly slips away, help me not to brush it off like background noise. Teach me to treat that stillness (or that uneasy flutter in my heart) as Your hand on the steering wheel, turning me before I crash into something I can’t see. I don’t want to outrun Your direction or drown it out with my own plans. Keep me sensitive, tuned in to Your Spirit, and ready to stop when You say stop, even if everything around me screams go. Amen."
God bless you!

DEVOTIONAL QUESTIONS
1. What does it look like when our peace rises or dips, and are Christians noticing it in real time?
Some days it’s obvious, like a smoke alarm chirp we can’t ignore. Other days it’s quieter, more like grit in a shoe we keep trying to walk off. We’ve all felt it. We've all been there. Some of us were halfway through a TV show last week, and God's peace just lifted. We hit pause. We asked, “Lord, is this You?” Not dramatic, just honest. When His peace lifts, we don’t push forward anyway. We slow down, stop, and let Him guide us through His Holy Spirit.
2. How do we tell if a choice is healthy by what it leaves inside us?
We can check the aftertaste. Do we feel settled and clear, or uncomfortable and foggy? God’s leading doesn’t pressure, it settles like a door that calmly closes shut. We ask, “Is this drawing us nearer to Jesus or undermining our relationship with Him”? If the fruit is rest, courage, and room to breathe, we keep walking. If it’s scratching inside our heart, we step back and let the Lord redirect us.
3. Will we pivot quickly when our peace lifts mid-stream?
Plans change. We’re in a conversation, a purchase, a plan, and suddenly the floor creaks. That’s our cue. We don’t need a ten-page explanation from God to take the exit. We can simply say, “Alright, Lord, we’re listening,” and close the tab, change the tone, or stop the thing. Quick obedience beats long regret. The peace usually returns right where we said yes.
4. When a Christian's sense of peace is fuzzy, who do they bring into the room?
Sometimes we’re too close to the situation. We text a mature, godly friend, ask for ten minutes, and lay it out plain. No fishing for agreement, just the facts. We pray together, open the Word, and check our motives. If wise counsel hums the same tune the Spirit’s been humming, clarity sharpens. If it clashes, we hold. A short, holy wait can save a long, messy cleanup (trust me on this).
5. How do Believers build daily habits that let God's peace lead the way?
We keep short accounts with God. We confess fast, forgive quick, and stay in Scripture like it’s breakfast for the soul. We trim the noise a little: fewer late-night scrolls, more quiet minutes to hear the Shepherd. Tiny habits, stacked over time, make a path we can actually follow. Then, when trouble tries to blow in, we’re not scrambling. We’re already anchored, led by the One who guards us with His peace. Hallelujah!
