TODAY'S TEACHING

We have heard of your faith in Christ Jesus [the leaning of your entire human personality on Him in absolute trust and confidence in His power, wisdom, and goodness] and the love which you [have and show] for all the saints.
 —Colossians 1:4

What does God really want from you today? Not a flawless performance. Not a day where you make every decision perfectly. God wants faith.

Hebrews 11:6 says, “But without faith it is impossible to please him.” That gets right to the heart of it. Faith is what pleases God. Without it, you can't.

According to today's scripture, faith means leaning the weight of your life onto the Lord because you believe He can hold it. Your plans, your questions, your family, your future, even those decisions you still aren’t sure about.

All of it. Every single thing.

Most of us would rather stand on our own two feet. We like certainty and we especially like knowing we’re right. Then life hands us a decision where both choices look reasonable and neither one comes with a note from Heaven.

Now what?

A woman my wife and I knew named Karen once had to make a difficult decision concerning her elderly father. He could no longer safely live alone, but every option seemed to hurt somebody. She had brochures spread across the dining-room table, handwritten notes shoved beneath a yellow legal pad and a cup of tea beside her that she’d reheated twice and still forgotten to drink.

One facility was closer. Another had better care. Her father hated the whole conversation, which made everything harder.

Karen prayed until she felt like she’d run out of new sentences to say. Finally she whispered, “God, just tell me what to do.” Nothing came with one hundred percent certainty, and that bothered her.

Eventually she made the best decision she could with the wisdom she had. Then she committed it to the Lord and moved forward. Was every part of it easy afterward? No.

Her father complained, and Karen questioned herself. There were afternoons when she sat in her car outside the facility wondering whether she’d chosen wrong. Still, somewhere in those weeks, she began learning something important.

Faith wasn’t knowing with absolute certainty that she’d made the perfect decision. Faith was trusting the Lord enough to keep walking when she couldn’t be absolutely certain.

She did her best, and God did the rest.

That’s where many of us get tangled up. We think pleasing God means never making a mistake, but it doesn’t. We think faith means somehow knowing exactly what God knows, but it doesn’t.

Faith means believing that when your heart is surrendered to the Lord, He is capable of leading you, correcting you, redirecting you, and keeping you near Him.

Proverbs 3:5 says, “Trust in the LORD with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding.” There is that word again. Lean.

People sometimes think leaning sounds weak. Try carrying something heavy for twelve hours and see how attractive leaning starts to look. There are burdens you were never meant to hold upright by yourself.

The Lord doesn’t ask you to figure out your entire life and report back after you’ve got everything organized. He asks you to trust Him. Sometimes that means saying, “God, I believe this is the right direction. If I’m wrong, please correct me.”

That’s a real prayer. Not fancy. Not over the top.

Just honest.

There are some things we already know are outside God’s will because Scripture makes them plain. We don’t need to pray about whether lying, bitterness, adultery, hatred, greed, or unforgiveness are God’s best.

Other decisions aren’t nearly so obvious. Which job should I take? Should I speak now or wait? Is this opportunity really from God, or do I simply want it badly?

That’s where dependence becomes very practical. 

You pray, stay in God’s Word, listen to the Holy Spirit, and seek wise counsel when you need it. Then you trust the Lord with what you still don’t know.

Matthew 7 warns about the broad way that leads to destruction and the narrow way that leads to life. None of us wants to wander onto the wrong road. Still, living terrified that one imperfect step will somehow put you beyond God’s reach isn’t faith either.

The Lord is a better Shepherd than you are a sheep. Think about that for a minute. Your safety does not depend entirely on your ability to hear perfectly. It depends on the faithfulness of the One leading you.

That takes some pressure off.

You can pray, “God, Your will be done in my life. If I’m getting ahead of You, slow me down. If fear is keeping me behind, move me forward. If I’m turning somewhere I shouldn’t, straighten me out.”

Then breathe. You don’t have to spend the whole day inspecting every thought with a magnifying glass. You can keep leaning.

When you’re uncertain, lean. When you’re confident, lean. When the decision works beautifully, lean. When you have to admit, “Well, I didn’t handle that very well,” lean again.

Faith isn’t something you save for emergencies. It’s the posture of your everyday life. Before the phone call, the decision, the difficult conversation, the meeting, or the moment when somebody is testing every ounce of patience you thought you had, lean on the Lord.

Before you walk into work, lean. Before you go to sleep, lean. Sometimes the most honest prayer you’ll pray all day is simply, “God, I trust You.”

Simple words. Big surrender.

You may not know everything you’re supposed to do today. Nobody does. But you can know what matters most.

Keep your heart turned toward the Lord. Trust His Word and His Spirit more than your emotions and His wisdom more than your own understanding. Keep giving Him permission to guide you, correct you, and redirect you when necessary.

That’s faith. And according to Scripture, faith is only thing that pleases God.

So don’t spend today trying to impress the Lord with how well you can stand alone. Lean on Him and let Him carry the weight. Let Him straighten the places where you’ve gotten crooked and lead you back when you wander.

You don’t have to live perfectly to please God. You need to live believing Him. Keep leaning on the Lord today, especially when you don’t have every answer.

May He strengthen your faith, steady your decisions, and keep reminding you that you are safest when the full weight of your life is resting on Him.
