God Won’t Let You Truly Succeed Without Him – Here’s Why

I know that the path of [life of] a man is not in himself;
It is not within [the limited ability of] man [even one at his best] to choose and direct his steps [in life].
 —Jeremiah 10:23

What if the thing you keep calling failure is actually God refusing to let you succeed without Him That changes the way you look at things.

We like to think we can manage our own lives.

Plan better.

Work harder.

Push longer.

Eventually, though, we discover something humbling. We need God. That's exactly what today's verse tell us.

That isn’t weakness. It’s wisdom.

A man I knew built a successful business. Good money. Employees. A nice home. From the outside, he looked like he had made it.

One afternoon he sat alone in his office with a cold half-eaten sandwich, and paperwork he had read three times without really seeing. The business was growing.

But, his marriage was struggling.

His temper was getting shorter.

Prayer had become something he did only when trouble showed up.

He had achieved success. And he just wasn’t enjoying his life. That’s the part nobody puts on the highlight reel.

You can have money and no peace. Recognition and no rest. A packed schedule and an empty soul.

So what is real, godly success?

Psalm 127:1 says, “Except the LORD build the house, they labour in vain that build it.” (this is one of my favorite verses)

People can build without God. They can make money. Gain influence. Create something impressive.

The question is whether what they build will actually satisfy them, strengthen them, and last.

Sometimes we ask God for success, and He starts working on us instead.

We ask for promotion. The Lord talks about patience.

We ask for increase. God deals with how we handle what we already have.

We ask for influence. The Lord starts exposing our need for approval.

Not exactly what we asked for.

Still, He knows what He’s doing.

God loves you too much to help you become successful at destroying your own peace. Real success is bigger than a bank balance.

It includes joy.

Healthy relationships.

Contentment.

Purpose.

A clear conscience.

And most importantly, closeness with the Lord.

You can build a reputation. You cannot buy peace with God. 

You can fill your calendar. That doesn’t mean your life is full.

Sometimes we don’t really want God as our partner.

We want Him as our backup plan. We make the decision, then ask Him to bless it. The Lord wants more than that.

He wants your work.

Your finances.

Your relationships.

Your plans.

Your private decisions.

Your heart.

Everything. Because God sees what you cannot see.

He knows which opportunity will bless you and which one will quietly drain you.

He knows which relationship strengthens your faith and which one keeps pulling you backward.

He knows where the road leads. You don’t.

And there’s freedom in admitting that.

You don’t have to know everything.

You don’t have to force every door.

You don’t have to keep believing one more achievement will finally make everything inside you feel settled.

Invite the Lord into the ordinary stuff too.

The meeting.

The purchase.

The decision.

The opportunity.

Ask Him what success should look like for you right now.

Because sometimes success means moving forward. Sometimes it means staying put.

Sometimes it means receiving the opportunity. Sometimes it means having enough wisdom to turn it down.

The Lord knows the difference. So stop measuring your life only by what can be counted.

Money can be counted. Followers can be counted. Peace cannot.

Neither can joy.

Neither can a strong marriage.

Neither can waking up knowing your heart is right with God.

Let the Lord build your life.

Let Him interrupt your plans.

Let Him correct what needs correcting.

You may be able to accomplish plenty without acknowledging God.

But the kind of success worth having, the kind that doesn’t own you, exhaust you, or pull you away from the Lord, is built with Him.

And if God keeps putting His finger on something you’re trying to build without Him, maybe He isn’t blocking your success at all. Maybe He’s protecting you from becoming successful at the wrong thing.

Stay close to the Lord. Let Him lead what you build, and may He give you the kind of success that strengthens your faith, blesses your life, and gives Him the glory.

Please correct me when I start leaning too much on myself and help me want Your presence more than I want proof that I am succeeding. I need You in all of it, Lord, even the parts I keep pretending are small. Amen."
