What Happens When You Ignore God’s Still Small Voice

TODAY'S TEACHING

Happy is the man that feareth alway: but he that hardeneth his heart shall fall into mischief.
 —Proverbs 28:14

God talks in more ways than I can keep track of—through a verse, a knot in my gut, some inner leading I can’t shake off. And when I dig in my heels, I end up missing things He’s flat-out trying to hand me. Stuff with my name on it, sitting there unopened.

I’ve argued with Him over the dumbest little stuff and over big things too. Every “Do this” felt like I needed to negotiate. But He never moved. He loved me too much to let me win a fight I’d regret.

One story—I was about to sign for a used work truck. Looked sharp, clean paint, low miles, price had me grinning. Inside, I hear it: Just wait a little longer.

I really didn’t like that. The seller’s hyping it, saying other buyers were interested. Scarcity has a way of barking loud. It’ll get in your head quick. My hand was on the pen.

I set it down, walked outside, and looped the lot. Prayed until my chest unclenched. God's still small voice didn’t budge. Still: Wait.

By Monday, that truck was gone. I felt dumb. Mad too, if I'm being honest. Thought I’d missed my shot. Then outta nowhere, I spot another listing—better year, better color, fewer miles, better price. One owner, records stacked thick. The mechanic gave it the nod.

That changed me a little. God wasn’t holding me back. He was saving me from settling. Peace finally stuck around.

I can’t tell you how many potholes I could’ve skipped if I’d just obeyed like that sooner. Instead, I would have likely had tow trucks show up more than once because I thought I was smarter.

We’re all like that sometimes. Stubborn. Stuck in our ways even though they’re not working. Like shoving a butter knife into a lock and then wondering why the door’s not opening.

But we don’t have to stay hard like baked clay. We can be soft again. Bendable, not brittle. A yes on our lips before God's instruction even hits.

Our spirit is like a radio. You dial it in right, and the static eases. God uses those inner leadings, that check in your gut, His Word, His Spirit (all of it) to keep you out of ditches.

And He doesn’t just say “turn.” He gives you the power to turn. Grace to do it. Strength to keep going.

So I encourage you to stop any overthinking. Say yes quicker. Obey sooner. You’ll save yourself miles of regret because you didn't ignore (or miss) His voice.

If this resonates with you, here's a short prayer you can say today:

"Dear God, I know I’ve tuned You out more than I want to admit, letting the noise bury Your voice and harden the edges of my heart. Sometimes I run after what feels urgent, only to trip over my own rush and land empty. But when I finally slow down, even the softest nudge from Your Holy Spirit melts me back into peace. Keep my heart tender, quick to hear, quick to yield, and steady enough to follow wherever You lead. Amen."

God bless you!

DEVOTIONAL QUESTIONS

1. What signs do Christians notice when we’re tuning out God’s still, small voice?

Sometimes we get oddly busy and strangely empty at the same time. The Bible stays closed “until later,” our playlist never turns off, and we keep scrolling even though our eyes burn. We snap at people we love, sleep lightly, and carry a knot right under the ribs. It’s like the dash light winks at us (check engine) and we turn up the radio so we don’t have to hear it.

2. What usually drives us to ignore that whisper, and what does it cost us?

Mostly? Hurry, pride, and the fear of looking slow while everyone else posts wins. We want control, so we push past that nudge and pay for it with regret, thin peace, and repairs that take longer than patience would’ve. Sometimes we buy the shiny thing and then meet the repair bill. We send the spicy text and then draft the apology. God isn’t out to smack us (He loves us). He just won’t bless the shortcuts that bruise us.

3. How does a Christian tell the difference between God’s voice and our own noise?

His voice agrees with Scripture (always) and carries a quiet rightness—firm but not shaming, clear without drama. Our noise is often bossy, rushed, and a little panicky. We feel like we need to decide now or lose everything. We can sleep on it, open the Word, ask two trusted believers who aren’t impressed by us, and watch the fruit for a week: more love and courage usually means God. More spin and ego, that’s us. Peace may not mean easy, but it won’t feel frantic.

4. What simple step can Believers take today to retune our ears and obey faster?

Practice a holy pause. Sixty seconds before we speak, post, buy, or commit: “Lord, is this You?” Phone face down, one deep breath, then write the first clean step we already know to take, and do it within ten minutes. Call. Apologize. Empty the cart. Say no. Say yes. Small yeses turn the big wheel, and quick obedience keeps the heart soft so the next things God says to us lands easier.

5. If we’ve missed it, how do we return without shame and move forward?

We come back the way kids do, fast and honest. “Lord, I missed You. I’m turning.” No speeches, just genuine repentance, just a quick turn. We make the call we owe, fix what we can, and ask for today’s next right step, not a twelve-month map. Then we walk on, lighter and a touch wiser, refusing to wear the miss as a name tag. Grace doesn’t rub our nose in it. Grace takes our hand and says, “Let’s go.” Hallelujah.
