How To Begin a Fast

The first thing to do is to make a note of the reason for fasting.

Youโ€™re going to want to keep this note handy so you can keep your focus.

This reminder should keep you on course to complete the fast.

To start, keep in mind that there are several types of fasts.

Kinds Of Fasts:

1) Liquid Fast - You would only drink water.

2) Juice Fast - You would only drink water and you would drink juice during meal times.

3) Meat Fast - You would only eat fruits and vegetables.

4) Total Fast - You would fast from both foods and liquids for a certain period of time.

Warningโ€ฆ

Firstly, please study the Bible regarding fasting. Look up scriptures about the topic and let them reach deep into your spirit. Ask the Lord for wisdom about your fast.

Fasting affects your spirit, soul, and body.

Secondly, it is imperative that you seek the advice of a medical professional when it comes to fasting. This is in case there is anything you need to be made aware of.

Thirdly, I also suggest you look through fasting health information to be brought up to speed on the topic.

The reason I am recommending these initial steps is for you to acquire knowledge. The more you know the better because it can help avoid injuring yourself.

Before you begin, there is nothing wrong with letting your family and friends know what you are doing. Other than that, go about your day as you normally would and donโ€™t complain.

Remember, keep your eyes on the reason youโ€™re fasting.

How To End a Fast

WARNING: Be careful about what you eat to end your fast. Do not eat solid, whole foods.

As youโ€™ll discover through your own due diligence, it is best to slowly move into eating solid food.

Soups or salads are commonly what people have chosen to end a fast.

Light is right!

Some have strategized that the duration of your fast is how long it will take to step back into eating heavier foods (eg 7 day water fast means it could take up to 7 days before eating solid foods once fast is ended).

Bible Verses On Fasting (KJV Scriptures)

Matthew 6:16-18 (KJV) Moreover when ye fast, be not, as the hypocrites, of a sad countenance: for they disfigure their faces, that they may appear unto men to fast. Verily I say unto you, They have their reward. 17 But thou, when thou fastest, anoint thine head, and wash thy face; 18 That thou appear not unto men to fast, but unto thy Father which is in secret: and thy Father, which seeth in secret, shall reward thee openly.

Acts 14:23 (KJV) And when they had ordained them elders in every church, and had prayed with fasting, they commended them to the Lord, on whom they believed.

Acts 13:2 - 3 (KJV) As they ministered to the Lord, and fasted, the Holy Ghost said, Separate me Barnabas and Saul for the work whereunto I have called them. And when they had fasted and prayed, and laid [their] hands on them, they sent [them] away.

Esther 4:16 (KJV) Go, gather together all the Jews that are present in Shushan, and fast ye for me, and neither eat nor drink three days, night or day: I also and my maidens will fast likewise; and so will I go in unto the king, which [is] not according to the law: and if I perish, I perish.

Isaiah 58:3-6 (KJV) Wherefore have we fasted, say they, and thou seest not? wherefore have we afflicted our soul, and thou takest no knowledge? Behold, in the day of your fast ye find pleasure, and exact all your labours. 4 Behold, ye fast for strife and debate, and to smite with the fist of wickedness: ye shall not fast as ye do this day, to make your voice to be heard on high. 5 Is it such a fast that I have chosen? a day for a man to afflict his soul? is it to bow down his head as a bulrush, and to spread sackcloth and ashes under him? wilt thou call this a fast, and an acceptable day to the Lord? 6 Is not this the fast that I have chosen? to loose the bands of wickedness, to undo the heavy burdens, and to let the oppressed go free, and that ye break every yoke?

Ezra 8:21-23 (KJV) Then I proclaimed a fast there, at the river of Ahava, that we might afflict ourselves before our God, to seek of him a right way for us, and for our little ones, and for all our substance. 22 For I was ashamed to require of the king a band of soldiers and horsemen to help us against the enemy in the way: because we had spoken unto the king, saying, The hand of our God is upon all them for good that seek him; but his power and his wrath is against all them that forsake him. 23 So we fasted and besought our God for this: and he was intreated of us.

Luke 2:37 (KJV) And she [was] a widow of about fourscore and four years, which departed not from the temple, but served [God] with fastings and prayers night and day.

What Do You Eat When Fasting In The Bible

When you first start to look into this you'll quickly come upon the Daniel Diet.

The Daniel Diet, as the name implies, was inspired by the prophet Daniel in the Bible. It has quickly become popular within the United States in order to help people on their journey to healthier eating and growing spiritually.

In the Bible you'll find 2 scriptures that inform us that Daniel fasted twice.

When he first fasted he ate only vegetables and water.

During the second fast he stopped eating meat, wine and other rich foods.

Many churches across the US are encouraging their people to participate in fasting for their own spiritual growth and for a healthier lifestyle.

Do keep in mind that this type of fast can be challenging as it does change ones diet quite noticeably. People on the Daniel Diet can draw strength and support from others who are also on the diet.

Always do your own due diligence before carrying out a fast.

How Many Hours Should a Christian Fast

This is a question that always comes up when it comes to fasting.

The duration of a fast is up to the participant. They should carefully determine this amount of time before commencing.

One can fast a meal, fast from eating food for a day, and even fast for several days.

Starting slowly is better.

Never done a fast? Start with fasting one meal.

Grow from there.

What Time Should One Fast?

Fasting can occur at any time. It really does come down to preference and ability.

For example, fasting can occur once a year, once a month, weekly or even daily, as mentioned above.

Ultimately a person's fasting time depends on what someone is fasting from and what their schedule is like.

A person is often cautioned to fast when it is safe to do so. They do not want to get caught being distracted or overloaded while weakened during a fast.

What Time to Fast

Again, the time to fast is a personal and circumstantial decision.

Fasting can occur at any time and for as many days as makes sense to the person who is fasting.

A person may even to fast on a schedule.

For example, one pastor fasts every Tuesday and Thursday for one meal. They use that time they would have been eating to pray.

Ultimately when a person chooses to fast should be a time they can allocate to prayer and proper focus on God.

Always stick to consistent fasting. This is where the breakthrough often lies.

How Long to Fast

The durations of a fast are as diverse as the people who carry them out.

For some, they can only handle short durations.

For others, they can fast for days.

Make the choice based on your own condition of health.

Remember, it is not about the duration of the fast as much as its about the time dedicated to the Lord.

Do not compare yourself with someone else.

Types of Fasting

Fasting is simply abstaining from something.

There are many different ways to fast aside from food and drink.

Many fast from social media, sugar, and a number of different things.

And depending upon what a person fasts they can oftentimes go on a longer fast than they could if they were fasting food and drink.

Living a fasted lifestyle.

How To Properly Fast

There are numerous ways to fast.

Fasting has a lot of health benefits because oftentimes people will hold off from eating poorly.

Thus, people who decide to consistently fast often drop weight and live a healthier life.

However, be very cautious and always do your own due diligence about fasting.

It must be done properly.

Below are 10 tips to a happy and healthy fast when it comes to food.

1. Shorter Is Safer

Since there are number of different ways to fast, there are also a number of durations you can choose from.

As I said above, shorter is safer.

Think in terms of a number of hours up to one day.

You can even just fast one meal.

Keep in mind that longer fasts increase in risk.

The best way to avoid getting into trouble is to stick to shorter fasts. Grow from there.

If you desire to do a longer fast seek medical advice first.

2. Eat a Little

As I've mentioned throughout this article, just cutting down on something is a fast.

This means when it comes to fasting food, just eating a little, rather than a lot, is still considered a fast.

Yes, you can stop eating altogether for a predetermined amount of time, but you don't have to.

You can still eat a little.

This is true especially when you first start fasting.

By eating just a little bit, you can greatly reduce the risks involved with fasting.

3. Drink Something

When our bodies get dehydrated, we tend to recognize the symptoms quickly.

Our mouth drys up, muscles can get tense, and the list goes on.

Drinking something while fasting is critically important.

Stay hydrated at all costs.

How much you drink is up to what your body tells you.

Since get about 25% of your fluid intake from the food you eat (I know, crazy right?), it's just too easy to get dehydrated.

So make sure you drink ample amounts of fluid while fasting.

Your body will tell you and it'll likely need several litres of fluid every day you fast.

4. Don't Stay Still (sorta)

If we get with a slow spot during the day, its easy to recognize we're hungry and desire food.

A great key to not breaking your fast is not staying still.

What I mean is activity can distract you.

If you can, use your time of fasting to read God's Word and pray. Listen to some preaching.

Just make sure whatever you do it's not too active.

Remember, you're fasting.

5. End Your Fast Slowly

When someone completes a fast it can be quite exciting.

Knowing they stuck with it and didn't cheat can be quite exhilarating.

However, this is not the time to stuff your face.

End your fast slowly.

Don't eat heavy.

Ease your way back into normal eating.

6. Stop If Your Body Says So

Listen to your body.

This is a direction I've suggested you consider a few times now.

This is all the more true when your body doesn't feel too good.

This is why I recommend starting slowly and beginning fasting for shorter durations.

Always choose the safer route.

If you start to feel sick while fasting stop right away.

Consult a physician if your body really doesn't feel good.

Better to be safe than sorry.

You can always fast again once you recover.

7. Avoid Muscle Loss

Fasting can often lead to muscle loss.

One way to avoid this is to eat enough protein.

Doing so helps control your hunger.

Again, this is why I mentioned that when starting, eating a little goes a long way to train your body so it can fast even longer - when it's ready to.

Don't be afraid to eat a little protein while fasting.

8. Eat Plenty of Whole Foods on Non-Fasting Days

Fasting for most reading this is for getting closer to God and for health benefits.

Even though your fast has you abstaining from food, your body does still need things to remain healthy.

Many advocates for fasting recommend one ensure their regular diet consists of whole foods.

These types of food include eggs, vegetables, meat, fruit, legumes, etc.

Eating these whole foods when you arenโ€™t fasting might help your journey to better health and also help you while you are fasting.

9. Consider Supplements

When fasting, essential nutrients are often not being ingested.

It's important to consider taking some sort of supplement to be safe.

A multivitamin can do the trick for peace of mind and is something you should consider (or as mentioned above, whole foods).

10. Don't Be Too Active

If you are an experienced faster then being active while fasting may be something you can do.

However, for the newbies reading this, don't be too active.

Walking or stretching may be okay.

Let your body tell you and don't overdo it.

IN CONCLUSION

Fasting is more times than not, a great and giant step towards better health.

However, always consult a doctor before commencing a fast. It just makes sense so that you cover all your bases.

Fasting is best defined as the practice of abstaining from food and beverages for a certain period of time.

It increases the health of many who do fast.

In order to be safe while fasting, it's best to keep it short and not be too active.

Also, eating healthy when you're not fasting goes a very long way in maintaining overall health and longevity.
